This January, Sydney Festival will bring together the biggest and best of the world’s performing and visual arts for one giant cultural celebration. The diverse program will showcase everything from burlesque, cheeky cabaret and Canadian circus, to high energy jazz, indie rock and Russian theatre; from contemporary dance to family programs to traditional Indigenous arts practice.
Choose from over 450 performances and around 100 events performed by over 1000 artists in more than 46 venues. Highlights this year include
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds will be playing the band’s 16th studio album Skeleton Tree, recorded in the aftermath of the tragic death of Cave’s 15-year-old son Arthur last year. Their 2016 album Skeleton Tree is an exquisite reflection on grief and change, driven as ever by Cave’s stark and personal writing and Warren Ellis’ mercurial arrangements into dark new territory. Few bands are as qualified to lead you through such terrain.
PJ Harvey returns with her full 10-piece band, following the release of the critically acclaimed album The Hope Six Demolition Project. This will be Australia’s first chance to hear her ninth studio album live in concert.
A fascinating labyrinth of endless mirrors, magnified to terrifying dimensions, House of Mirrors recently messed with minds at Dark Mofo. Stumble your way through this mirror labyrinth and tumble your way around thousands of disorientating optical illusions and lose yourself in some bewildering reflections.
Transmitted direct to the audience through headphones, the show’s groundbreaking sound design plugs into the power of imagination. Based on the novel Amazon Beaming by Petru Popescu, the audience will go on a journey deep into the Amazon and beyond.
Plunge into a white ocean of over one million balls. This installation will be the biggest ball pit in the Southern Hemisphere, with 1.1 million monochromatic balls from New York art/architecture outfit Snarkitecture.
